We are small group of singers and musicians who provide the music for the children-friendly hymns that are sung during the 9:30 Family Mass. We are always in need of more singers, as well as musicians covering any type of instrument. In terms of time commitment, we usually only cover Masses during Holy Ghost school terms.
We meet 30 minutes before Mass starts, at 9:00, up on the organ balcony, and go through the hymns for the relevant Mass. We also run a rota as not everyone can make each Sunday.
Some of us have small children who join us in the singing or help out with the younger ones that go downstairs for the Childrens’ Liturgy. We only draw on a limited number of hymns for the Family Mass (from the Laudate hymn book), so these hymns quickly become familiar to musicians and singers.
Testimony of one of its members.
My family and I sing and play at the 09.30 am Holy Mass on Sunday. No matter the chaos of our morning, once we arrive at church soon after 09.00; we are all present in our duty.
This shift from our day to day to being present and serving God I have realised is so important and even more so that we do this as a family. We rehearse the hymns for the service with the rest of the group and before we know it, the bell chimes and Holy Mass begins. As someone who would not be the first to sing in front of others I feel I forget myself and hear the words of the hymn I am singing like a prayer. We choose the hymns related to the readings and gospel so they hopefully provide the congregation with further reflection.
I could not more highly recommend partaking in Holy Mass as part of the music group. Music for me adds another lens to worship and genuinely there is nothing more rewarding than fulfilling a duty to God and serving others.
