The morning of Sunday, May 12, 2024, was a special day for the Holy Ghost parish community. For the first time in the parish’s centenary history, we received a visit from the Apostolic Nuncio of His Holiness Pope Francis.
Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía arrived at the parish around 11 in the morning, accompanied by his secretary, the young priest Andrew Coy. Both were welcomed by the parish priest, Father Richard Whinder, who, along with Father Ariel Beramendi, greeted the Spanish archbishop, ambassador of the Holy See in the United Kingdom.
As the white and yellow colors waved in the Holy See’s flag, which had been hoisted days before, the parish community filled the church to celebrate the solemn Eucharist at 11:30 in the morning. A large number of altar servers solemnized the Holy Mass, and the parish choir’s music couldn’t have been better.
During the Mass, His Excellency Buendía conveyed Pope Francis’s greetings to the attendees and the entire community. After the solemn Eucharist, the parish priest thanked the nuncio for his visit and invited everyone to share a moment of fellowship in the “Holy Ghost” school courtyard, located next to the church. This way, the Apostolic Nuncio and the authorities of the school and the parishioners had the opportunity to converse and get to know each other better.
We are sharing some images of this historic visit, thanks to photographer Marcin Mazur, who immortalized this event that will leave a fond memory in our community.
